Christian Redl: Shark Whisperer
When I learned that a professional free-diver would be teaching classes in the sport at our resort in the Maldives, I signed up. Christian Redl has been free diving for years. His passion for deep diving has taken him to many exotic and far-flung locations to see just how deep and how long he can go under water. He can hold his breath for over 7 minutes and teaches others how to double their own time. Angie and I started the course by holding our breaths for 1:20 and 2:58 respectively. After three attempts, Angie held her breath for 3:10 and I held mine for 6:17. True to his word, we had doubled our times. Being able to hold your breath longer under water allows one to snorkel longer and closer to the many wonders found in the sea.
One of Christian’s favorite creatures to dive with are sharks. He has been following them for years and now endeavors to raise awareness about their plight and how we humans must reverse or destruction of this species. Through his documentary, “Shark Rescue” he explains that most shark attacks are accidents and that humans are not a preferred food source for sharks. With a little understanding, we can change our fear of sharks into respect.
